Water Update (July 19, 2010)
The East Tennessee Development District recently released their annual report and it again shows the cost of MUS water to be far below average for East Tennessee. Our regional system provides economies of scale that allow most of our utility districts to also provide water at below average rates. Click here for report information.
MUS is nearing completion of a large water main project from the south side of town to the East Tennessee Progress Center. This project will remove any MUS reliance on Witt Utility District to transport water and also provide the flows and fire protection necessary for large industrial customers. Effective December 1, 2010, Witt Utility District will separate from the MUS water system in lieu on the own plant near White Pine which will draw from the Nolichucky River. Later this summer MUS will begin another large water main project form the Carriager Street area eastward to Hwy 25E to improve water flows and system pressure for fire protection in the east and south parts of the City.
MUS continues with the installation meters & transmitters to enable remote automatic reading of water meters. MUS received $800,000 of stimulus funding through the Tennessee Dept of Conservation to assist in this project (about 40% of the overall cost). The water meters will report readings to the Smart electric meter and then be transported over a secure and high speed network utiliziong our fiber optic network (FiberNET). This system will provide daily readings and improved ability to detect customer problems.
